A Romantic Elopement on Lake Como: Meredith & Ben’s Intimate Wedding

At Sarah Thomas Events, we pride ourselves on curating unforgettable moments, and Meredith and Ben’s elopement in June 2024 was no exception. This exquisite celebration was as unique as it was intimate, with just the bride and groom in attendance. Here’s how we helped craft their extraordinary day across the stunning locales of Lake Como.

Getting Ready: Grand Hotel Victoria, Menaggio

The day began at the luxurious Grand Hotel Victoria in Menaggio, where Meredith and Ben enjoyed the serene atmosphere and breathtaking views of the lake. Hair and makeup were masterfully handled by the talented Laura Cawte, who flew in from Bordeaux to ensure Meredith looked every inch the radiant bride. The morning was calm yet filled with quiet excitement as the couple prepared for their day ahead.

The Ceremony: Villa Monastero, Varenna

The ceremony took place at the enchanting Villa Monastero in Varenna, a venue that epitomizes the romance of Lake Como. Surrounded by the villa’s lush gardens and striking views, Meredith and Ben exchanged heartfelt vows on the iconc lakeside balcony with views across to Bellagio with Menaggio in the distance. The deeply emotional moment was made all the more special by the ceremony, put together with the happy couple under the guidance of Sarah in her guise as celebrant (Soleil d’Amour Ceremonies). On the day, Sarah opted to step back during the vows, allowing Meredith and Ben to feel completely alone in their private world—a truly unforgettable moment. At the end of the ceremony, the couple cut their heart-shaped cake on the balcony and enjoyed it with a glass of Prosecco ahead of visiting the beautiful gardens for more photos.

Cocktail Hour: A Sunset Boat Ride

After the ceremony, the newlyweds embarked on a private cocktail hour aboard a boat provided by Menaggio Water Taxi. As they cruised the sparkling waters of Lake Como, they sipped Aperol Spritzes and nibbled on grazing boards, beautifully presented in glassware we sourced according to the moodboard we'd put together in advance of the big day. Catering for this dreamy interlude, as well as the wedding cake, was courtesy of the brilliant team at Villa Monastero, who ensured everything was flawless. It was a moment of pure magic, with the shimmering lake and dramatic mountain vistas providing the perfect backdrop.

Dinner: Villa Lario Resort

The celebrations continued as the sunset cruise ended at the jetty of the stunning Villa Lario Resort, where Meredith and Ben enjoyed an intimate dinner for two at the resort's Amandus Ristorante. Every detail was thoughtfully planned to create an atmosphere of understated luxury. As the sun set over Lake Como, the couple shared a meal that marked the start of their married life in the most elegant way imaginable.

Florals: Opera de Gardenia x Guillaume Bernard Creative

Floral design played a central role in the day’s aesthetic, with all arrangements lovingly created under our floral brand, Opera de Gardenia, in collaboration with the incomparable Guillaume Bernard Creative. Together and against the clock, we crafted the beautiful organic cadre to the ceremony, featuring soft, romantic tones and lush greenery to complement the natural beauty of Lake Como.

As we only had the balcony for an hour before the ceremony, and we had to share it with the general public during this time (who didn't much care about our couple's wedding and instead prioritised taking selfie upon selfie in this iconic spot), it was no mean feat finding enough space to realise this installation.

We achieved the look in record time thanks to a military-style plan, with Guillaume taking on the logistics of first attaching the framework to the pillars and painstakingly filling it with the foliage that formed its core. Sarah followed, strategically adding an array of beautiful early summer blooms in soft whites, including delphiniums, campanula, roses and wax. The pair completed the design together, which they they transported to the boat following the ceremony, rearranging it and adding a few fresh blooms so the flowers could continue to be enjoyed for the rest of the afternoon.

Music: A Duo for the Ages

Adding to the day’s elegance was a live harp and violin duo booked through Fix the Music. Their performance provided a beautiful soundtrack for the ceremony and dinner, enhancing every moment with a touch of classic charm.

Meredith and Ben’s incredible day was immortalized by the exceptionally talented Katy Lunsford, whose photographs captured the love, joy, and breathtaking scenery of Lake Como. From the quiet moments before the ceremony to the laughter-filled boat ride, every detail was documented with care and artistry.
